Inquiry: The finances and sustainability of the social housing sector
Earlier this year, the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (LUHC) Committee opened an inquiry into ‘the finances and sustainability of the social housing sector in England’. The purpose of the inquiry is to delve into the raft of financial pressures the sector faces and examine the resources housing providers need to develop new homes and improve their existing stock.
The Committee also aims to explore the current level of grant funding available, examine the increasingly complex corporate structures forming across the sector, and analyse policy and regulatory challenges.
The Committee noted that social landlords have faced increased pressures in recent years as they attempt to build new homes, retrofit existing stock to improve energy efficiency, remediate building safety issues, and tackle damp and mould issues.
The inquiry sought written submissions from interested parties, which were used to inform an initial hearing in June 2023. The Committee will hold a second hearing before the end of the year.
